Forms of Worship

According to Merriam Webster, worship is the act of showing respect and love for God especially by praying with other people who believe in the same God. Worship is the process of surrendering your whole life into God’s hands. How do we truly worship and offer reverence to the Lord?

Grateful submission to God. The most common word for worship means to ‘bow down’. It is a show of respect and humility, silent acceptance or submission. Sometimes people show homage to God through prayer or praise. The book of Psalm includes so many expressions of worship: lament, repentance, prayers of vindication, songs of thanksgiving and praise. Bowing down to God means responding to God and presenting yourself to Him in repentance and faith to the work of God.

Service to others. The death and resurrection of Christ is a service to us from God. God sent HIs only son to earth, to live like us and go through hardship like being tempted, loss, false accusations, being hated and rejected in his own home. In our day to day lives, showing service to others is a way of demonstrating our love. When we look at our talents, how can we use these to serve others therefor worshipping God? Singing, painting, being sporty; how can use these to worship God?

Meditation. I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways. Psalm 119:15 The purpose of meditation is to enable us to hear God more clearly. You can practice meditation through listening to worship music, having and following a devotional and prayer. Meditation should be a daily practice.

God’s word. Reading and meditating on God’s word helps us to be in fellowship with Him. Worship should involve the Spirit of God and the truth of God’s word. The Bible is timeless and contains answers to all questions we may have about going through life. When we engage scripture for worship and spiritual transformation, we engage not only our mind but also our heart.

Obedience. Most people don’t think or consider obedience as a form of worship but it is. You can obey God and worship Him at the same time. God is pleased when we do things He asks us to wholeheartedly. That means that we should do things immediately and without hesitation.

Give me understanding, so that I may keep your law and obey it with all my heart.

Psalm 119:34

Prayer. This is considered the highest form of worship. How can we worship God through prayer? Start your day with Him, pray intentionally, write down things you are grateful for and thank god for them and turn your complaints into praise.

How can you worship God this week?
