Former Malawian MP commits suicide in parliament

A high-ranking former Malawian MP Clement Chiwaya, has shot himself dead in an office in parliament.

Clement, who was physically impaired – using a wheelchair due to the effects of Polio – served as the deputy speaker between 2014 and 2019.

Before murdering himself, he wrote a note, elaborating a dispute between him and some parliamentary officials. The dispute involved the ownership of a specially adapted vehicle.

Mr. Chiwaya claimed he had begun processes to buy the car following the lapse of his tenure. The car would enable him to drive despite his disability.

He was also accusing the parliament of failure to transfer the case, although he had paid for it. However, a statement released after the death of the MP, shows the matter is still in court.
