Verstappen beat Hamilton in Monaco to go top of the drivers standing

Red Bull’s Max Verstappen moved above Mercedes driver  Lewis Hamilton in the deriver standing after an impressive win at the Monaco grand Prix .

The Dutchman controlled the race after pole-sitter Charles Leclerc’s Ferrari broke down before the start.

Hamilton finished in seventh place, frustrated after Mercedes’s pre-race plans fell apart. He lost places to two drivers over the pit-stop period as Mercedes reversed their intended strategy.

Now Vesrtappen has won two races with 105 points and Hamilton won three and on 101 points. Carlo sainz of Ferrari finished second in Monaco and McLaren’ s Lando Norris closed the podium .

With Valtteri Bottas forced to retire and Sergio Perez finishing fourth, Red Bull also took the lead in the constructors’ championship and now lead Mercedes by a point.

The next race takes place on June 6 in Azerbaijan , a stop on the F1 calendar that missed out last year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hamilton admitted Red Bull could once again have the advantage over Mercedes as the pair battle in what looks set to be one of the tightest championships in years.
