Congo-Brazzaville’s Main opposition presidential candidate succumbs to COVID-19

Main opposition presidential candidate in Congo-Brazzaville Brice Parfait Kolelas has died from Covid-19.

Kolelas who spent the Sunday election day in the hospital was seen in a video circulating on social media, briefly, removing an oxygen mask and telling his supporters to vote in the polls.

He said, “My dear compatriots, I am in trouble. I am fighting death. Rise up as one person, I’m fighting on my deathbed. You, too, fight for your change.”

The 61-year-old was confirmed positive for coronavirus on Friday, the last day of election campaigns.

He was the son of a former prime minister and previously held the position of minister of fishing and civil servants.

Current President Dennis Sassou Nguesso who is 77 is expected to win again.

Provisional election results are not expected for days.
