Hospitals in Brazil risk collapsing

March, 10th, 2021 Hospitals in in most of Brazil’s largest city are close to collapsing as a result of the covid-19 pandemic. more than 80% of intensive care unit (ICU) beds are occupied in the capitals of 25 of 27 states in Brazil.

On Tuesday the country recorded 1,972 Covid-19 deaths, a new daily record. The country has cumulatively recorded 266,000 deaths and 11 million cases since the pandemic began.

The country now poses the second highest numbers worldwide after the US and the third highest number of confirmed cases.

According to the country’s Fiocruz institute, 15 state capitals have ICUs that are at more than 90% capacity including Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia and São Paulo.

in two other cities, Porto Alegre and Campo Grande the ICU’s have exceeded capacity. This has then pointed to the fear of an overload and danger of collapsing or closing of hospitals.
