Matiang’i: Gun license of leaders involved in by-election violence to be revoked

March, 5th 2021 – Interior security cabinet secretary Fred Matiangi says all those leaders involved in acts of violence in the Thursday by elections will have their gun license revoked.

Four parliament members engaged in violent confrontations leading to by-elections tainted by violence a few months to divisive referendum. The by-elections were also marred by allegations of voter bribery and intimidation.

Matiang’i said, “We cannot continue with this ritual of arresting them, they go to the courts and they are given bonds and get out to continue committing offences. The same cycle continues. I may not be in charge of the courts but we will use alternative mechanisms.”

This happens as a few leaders have condemned the election violence. Machakos governor Alfred Mutua condemned the acts of violence calling for legal action against the perpetrators regardless of their positions.

His counterpart Nandi county governor Stephen Sang said there is a high evident level of disregard of the law manipulating arms of the government to lack integrity in office.
