Ewagata: We demand action and accountability from the state over Ojwang’s death

The church is the latest to add its voice into the circumstances surrounding the death of Albert Ojwang’ Ochieng, who now the police claims did not die on their watch at the Central Police station in Nairobi.

Yhub Director Pastor David Ewagata, speaking to Pearl Radio, has expressed regret with police and the increasing number of murder cases allegedly on the hands of law enforcers, and called for accountability.

”I think as a church, we want accountability, and not just lip-service accountability. ” Ewagata remarked.

He added that this latest incident is part of a growing trend where police have been linked with the death of civilians including protesters demanding reduction of taxes and good governance.

”We need to be able to hear that this conversation is being taken to the next level of accountability amid pending cases involving the Kianjokoma brothers and Rex Masai.” Ewagata scoffed.

”The church is calling for justice for both the family and friends of OJwang’. His case should not go unresolved.” He concluded.

Ojwang, who was reportedly arrested in Homa Bay  and later brought to the station, died under what police described as suicide.

According to a statement, he was found with serious head injuries believed to be self-inflicted and was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead Sunday morning.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has already ordered the suspension of top police officers at the station. They are led by OCS in charge of the station.

Kanja said the move is to ensure a thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigation by the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA).

In a statement, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga expressed her condolences to Ojwang’s family, describing the incident as a tragic failure of a system meant to protect its citizens
