Youngster Emmanuel Wanyonyi qualified for the final of the men’s 800m after winning his semi-final heat and will be among the athletes chasing a medal this weekend
Wanyonyi led from gun to tape, taking control of the race to win in a time of 1:43.32 ahead of American Bryce Hoppel.
But compatriot Wycliffe Kinyamal missed out as he finished third in the second heat.
Kinyamal had hoped to scrape through on the non-automatic ticket, but his finishing time of 1:45.29 wasn’t enough to sail him through.
Wanyonyi will be taking part in the finals race on saturday at 8:05 PM EAT.
Eliud Kipchoge will also be in the line up as he attempts to become the first person to win three consecutive marathon titles at the pairs olympic Games tomorrow morning
Eliud Kipchoge won his second Olympic marathon title in Sapporo three years ago and is now looking to make it three in a row in Paris
