E-Mobility Experts Meet in Nairobi to Accelerate Adoption in Africa

Over 200 delegates, including government officials, UN representatives, and innovators, gathered in Nairobi for the five-day Africa E-Mobility Week 2024 to discuss advancing sustainable mobility across the continent.

Alexander Koerner from the UN Environment Program (UNEP) urged Africa to adopt e-mobility as a key climate action, leveraging its renewable energy sources like solar and geothermal power.

“Africa can leverage on its abundant renewable energy sources, such as solar and geothermal power, to roll out electrification of its public transportation systems,” Koerner said.

Stephen Nzioka from Kenya’s Ministry of Energy highlighted the challenge of inadequate charging infrastructure but noted progress, including government initiatives to expand public charging stations. Kenya now has around 5,000 electric vehicles, aided by tax incentives.

Warren Ondanje of the Africa E-mobility Alliance called for harmonized e-mobility standards across Africa to boost green transportation efforts.
