City hall eyes 300,000 more pupils through ‘dishi na county’

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja says City hall targets 300,000 more pupils to benefit from the  “Dishing County” program by the third of this academic year..

According to the new target, Sakaja says it aims to see more Nairobi children enrolled for education.

This initiative has provided nutritious meals to over 200,000 pupils daily at a cost of Ksh 5 each, significantly increasing primary school enrollment by 26pc.

This, as Sakaja  confirmed that one out of four pupils in Nairobi used to miss school due to lack of food, adding that the alarming statistic motivated him to initiate the program.

Data Statistics by the Ministry of Education contained in the strategic plan for the national education sector for 2023 to 2027   whose implementation is estimated to cost 5.02 trillion shillings, shows that boys are increasingly dropping out of primary school compared to their girl counterparts.

The data shows most boys drop out in Class 6 and have lower Class 8 completion rates compared to their girl counterparts.

According to the latest data,  net enrolment rates for boys was 78.6 percent while that for girls was 77.1 per cent.

School completion rates have also increased from 84.2 percent to 87.8 per cent by 2021 against the target of 100 per cent.

Education experts say investments by non-state actors agitating for education of girls uptake has in a great way influenced the data.
