The Kenya Catholic bishops have raised concern over the continued disagreement between President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto.
Speaking on Wednesday the bishops led by Nyeri Archbishop Anthony Muheria said the strained working relationship between the two is not healthy ahead of the general election.
“It is important that there is unity among the top leaders, as this gives confidence to the people,” said Muheria.
“As Church leaders we are ready to step in and mediate a working arrangement between the two leaders that our Country badly needs as provided by the Constitution,” he added.
They also cautioned against utterances by politicians that may cause violence before, during and after the election.
The Catholic bishops also called on the IEBC to make early preparations ahead of the 2022 general election.
Kisumu Archbishop Philip Anyolo noted that since the IEBC is now fully constituted, it should strengthen the electoral system and build public confidence.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK) has lauded the move by a number of churches to ban politicians from addressing congregants.
Speaking from Limuru, NCCK Secretary General Chris Kinyanjui said the church seeks to ensure the integrity of the pulpit is maintained.
“We have seen the violence witness in 2007 driven by politicians as they look for political positions. We don’t want that to be repeated, we have to set a good example as a church,” said Kinyanjui.
This is after the Anglican Church, the Catholic Church and the African Independent Pentecostal Church of Africa barred politicians from using the pulpit for their political agendas.
