Magoha bans portable hand sanitizers in school

Jan, 21st 2021 – Education CS George Magoha has instructed teachers to confiscate all small-bottle sanitizers from students.

Speaking after meeting education stakeholders in Kariobangi North yesterday, the CS said that some students have been using sanitizers to start fires in schools.

Magoha said, “I want to tell teachers that they must not allow small-bottle sanitizers into schools. If any child has portable sanitizer, it should be taken and kept and given when the child is leaving school.”

He said, “We have already seen that a fire was started using a sanitiser in one of the schools.”

The directive comes a day after the property was destroyed at Cheborge Boys Secondary School in Kericho after a fire broke out. According to reports, one side of a twin dorm was damaged but the cause of the fire is not known. The value of the property is also not known.

Bureti Sub-County Director of Education Joseph Birdai said, “The twin dormitory held 300 students with one side having been destroyed by the fire.”

Erlier in the month ahead of reopning, Magoha had stated that large quantities of sanitizers would not be allowed in schools. He further directed that about five litres would be allowed and would be handled by teachers.

Magoha said, “Our children are very creative and we all know what they may do with it. We will not allow over five litres of sanitisers to go into school.”
