Covid-19: US president-elect unveils 1.9 trillion dollar stimulus plan

Jan, 15th 2021 – President-elect Joe Biden has unveiled a 1.9trillion dollar stimulus plan for the coronavirus-sapped US economy before he takes office next week.

The relief proposal includes 415bn $ to fight the virus and 440bn $ for small businesses. Mr Biden, has promised to beat the pandemic that has killed more than 385,000 people in the US.

In a Nationwide address, Biden said, “A crisis of deep human suffering is in plain sight, and there’s no time to waste. We have to act and we have to act now.”

He added, “We not only have an economic imperative to act now, I believe we have a moral obligation.”

House speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer have praised Mr. Biden for including liberal priorities. They also said they would move quickly to pass it soon after Biden takes office next Wednesday.

The funds set aside to fight the virus will go towards contact tracing, testing and vaccination program. Mr. Biden admitted that they had been a failure.

He said, “The vaccines offer so much hope, but the vaccine rollout in the United States has been a dismal failure thus far.”

Part of his plan to fight the virus is to vaccinate 100 million Americans in his first 100 days in office.

He said, “This will be one of the most challenging operations efforts we’ve ever undertaken as a nation. We’ll have to move heaven and earth to get more people vaccinated.”

He might however find it difficult to convince Republicans that his package is not too expensive.
