Senator Irungu claims life in danger

Jan, 13th 2021 – Senate Majority Chief Whip Irungu Kang’ata has claimed that his life is in danger. This is following his letter on the hostile reception of the Building Bridges (BBI) Bill in the Mt Kenya region.

In a statement to the press, Kang’ata revealed that he has been receiving death threats from unknown people who would like him to disown the controversial letter. He added that some of those threatening his life are government operatives.

Speaking on the letter, he insisted that the report should be inclusive. He said, “It should be a process where everyone feels he is part of. But now when we politicize it, when it becomes weaponized, I think it may bring some issues.”

He has filed a report with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and an officer has been assigned to investigate the death threats. He said, “I have forwarded the text messages to DCI to an officer known as Mr. Mwangi who is in charge of the investigations. I hope that the culprits will be brought to book.”

Kang’ata further revealed that he had since been removed as the BBI coordinator for the Mt. Kenya region.

He said, “I saw the governors of Mt. Kenya region trying to downplay this issue, I saw other members of parliament, like my friend from Nyeri, Mweshimiwa Mbogo. now instead of listening to my message, he started killing the messenger. He is now becoming personal as opposed to looking at the issues which I have raised. These issues have been raised in good faith, there is no malafide, they are all intended to ensure this government succeeds.”

He also urged leaders to be candid and frank especially matters concerning the constitution. He says that he is supportive of the government but most important is to speak the truth.
