Jan, 13th 2021 – Kenyan international Michael Olunga has indeed signed for AL Duhail SC in Qatar after wide speculation for a move from Kashiwa Reysol.

Not much information was released about his signing. However, he featured in a 3-1 loss against Al Saad in a league match. Olunga played for about an hour before being withdrawn in the second half.

The former Gor Mahia striker left the Japanese league after bagging the Golden Boot with 28 goals from 32 matches. In the 2019 season, he finished with 27 league goals as Reysol ended the J2 season as champions, winning promotion to the first division.

Harambee Stars assistant coach Twahir Muhiddin backed Olunga’s decision saying, “You see when such opportunities come, players consider their personal interests, which could be different from what the fans think. Football is a short-term career and there are risks that can make it even shorter, so it is not easy to turn down big opportunities. Importantly, it must be understood Olunga has a manager who is more influential in such decisions and has his interests too.”

He added, “The sweet end of it is that Olunga has proved throughout his career he can thrive anywhere, and it cannot be any different in Qatar.”
