Dec, 17th 2020 – Matungu by-elections will take place on the 4th of March 2021, in Kakamega county. According to IEBC the by-election comes, following the death of MP Justus Murunga Makokha.
IEBC Chair Chebukati said that he took the step after receiving a letter from National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi who declared the speaker vacant. Murunga died on the 14th of November while being rushed to a hospital in Mumias.
Chebukati also says that Huruma in Uasin Gishu, Hells Gate and London in Nakuru county, Kiamokama in Kisii county and Kitise in Makueni county, will also be holding by-elections on the same date.
He has asked each political party intending to participate in the by-elections to submit the names of the persons contesting in the by party primary and the date of the party primary before or on the 21st of December 2020. He added that public officers intending to contest in the by-elections will have to resign from public office within seven days of the declaration of a vacancy by the Speakers of the respective assemblies.
He said, “The commission shall publish, in the gazette, the names of the persons contesting in a party primary and the date of the party primary within seven (7) days of receipt of the names of the candidates.“
