Dec, 16th 2020 – Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo has signed a contract extension worth a reported $228.2 million dollars, the richest in NBA history. The two-time Most Valuable Player, has agreed to a five-year deal.
His agent confirmed the details of the contract with the total value beating the mark of $228m dollars set by Houston Rockets guard James Harden in 2017.
He was named the MVP for the second successive season in September and also won the Defensive Player of the Year, becoming only the third player, after Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon, to earn both in the same season.
The Greek Freak has agreed to the supermax. One of just three players who have signed it and remain with their their original team: Stephen Curry, Damian Lillard and now Giannis. https://t.co/KTIEQPgOmO— Tom Haberstroh (@tomhaberstroh) December 15, 2020
This is a massive win for the Bucks who in 2013 drafted Antetokounmpo and have helped him develop into one of the league’s top three players.
They have however not reached the NBA Finals with Antetokounmpo but came close in 2018/19 and now that he is committed to the franchise, they should continue to knock on that door over the next few years.
His decision to sign with Bucks is great for them and the fans and no so much for rival teams that were hoping to sign him as a free agent next summer.
