Dec, 15th 2020 – Voters in Msambweni constituency are today casting ballots to elect their next representative. The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission, said that all logistical plans are in place ahead of the by-election.
Kwale County IEBC Returning officer Yusuf Abubakar said that the exercise will be conducted within strict Covid-19 protocols as outlined by the health ministry. He also added that adequate security, has been deployed in the area, to ensure the smooth running of the voting exercise.
According to Mr. Yusuf, all IEBC agent polls have been trained including poll clerks and observers. The Msambweni seat fell vacant after the death of area MP Suleiman Dori in March.
The constituency has a total of 69,003 registered voters. The IEBC has cleared eight candidates in the race who include, Feisal Bader (independent), Charles Bilali (Independent), Hassan Mwakulonda (Party of Economic Democracy), Mahmoud Sheikh (Wiper Party), Khamis Mwakaonje (United Green Movement), Marere Wamwachai (National Vision Party), Omar Boga (ODM) party and Mansury Kumaka (Independent).
Speaking to the press at Dr. Babla Diani High School which is the main tallying center, Mr. Abubakar said that the election materials would be transported to all polling stations under tight security.
He said, “The polling stations will remain open until 5 pm when counting is scheduled to begin,” he added, “Wearing of facemask and adhering to social distancing protocols is a must”
The by-elections will be held under strict covid-19 guidelines to curb the spread of the virus.
