Dec, 15th 2020 – The Arsenal vs Southampton and west Ham’s match against Crystal Palace on Wednesday will be behind closed doors after all Sporting events in London moved into the highest tier of coronavirus restrictions.
Up to 2,000 had been allowed at outdoor arenas in England after the end of the second national lockdown on 2 December. However, a rise in infections has resulted in the move into tier three.
Arsenal expressed their disappointment as they would not be able to welcome fans to the Emirates Stadium for the clash with Southampton while Fulham said that they understood the frustration and disappointment of their supporters, some of whom would have been in the stand for the meeting with Brighton.
The only midweek Premier league fixture which will have a crowd will be the top of the table clash at Anfield wen liverpool meet Tottenham. Chelsea, Crystal Palace and Tottenham will feel the impact this weekend when they play at home.
Frank Lampard, Chelsea boss, said that it would be hard to go back to playing without fans. He said, “We’ve seen already and felt the backing they give you and what it does to the game.”
He added, “I also think, I’m not telling the Government what to do, that we can control 2,000 fans coming into the stadium if they’re coming from within that tier or however they want to do that to keep things moving along. It’s unfortunate to say the least.”
As of Wednesday, only Everton, Brighton, Liverpool and Southampton in the top flight will be allowed 2,000 fans until the restrictions are eased.
