Dec, 15th 2020 – Seven time champion Lewis Hamilton believes that signing a contract extension at Mercedes will be a nice gift. His current deal at Mercedes expired at the end of the 2020 season which had a peak in a third place finish for the Brit in Abu Dhabi on Sunday.
Speaking to Sky Italy, Hamilton has put pressure on the Mercedes bosses by saying it would be a nice gift for everyone if the deal is completed before the 25th of December.
The 35 year old finished the 2020 season on 347 points with 11 race wins insisting that he wants to remain with Mercedes for the next season at least. He said, “Hopefully over the next couple of weeks ,the contract will be sorted. I would love, we would love, to get it done before Christmas, I think. I plan to be here next year; I want to be here next year. I think us, as a team, have more to do together and more to achieve both in the sport but even more outside the sport I think“
He added, “So yeah, I hope we can begin this week, discussions, and hopefully get it tied up before Christmas.”
Mercedes chief Toto Wolff insists that a deal will be completed with the seven time champion. He insists that there is no chance Hamilton won’t sign a new contract.
Wolff said, “It is going to happen. There is no reason it is not going to happen. Sunday’s race was Hamilton’s first since he recovered from coronavirus. And he revealed how he never felt as exhausted after a race than he did then.“
Hamilton speaking to Sky Sports F1 said, “I’m destroyed. I do not feel good. But I’m happy, I’m grateful. I’m alive, and I live to fight another day. I still managed to finish off the season with a podium so I’m thankful to the team that I was able to contribute.”
He added, “Considering the past couple of weeks I’ve had I really am generally happy with the weekend. That was a really hard race for me physically. All year physically I’ve been fine but today I definitely wasn’t. I don’t think I have ever been so blown. I am just glad it is over. My body is not feeling great but I have to look on the bright side.”
“I made it through, and I didn’t think at any period last week that I would be here. I am really just truly grateful for my health, to be alive, and looking forward to recovering over the period we are off, and then getting my body back to where I know it should be.” The 35 year old said.
