President Kenyatta and Ethiopia’s PM to launch Likoni foot bridge

Dec, 10th 2020 – President Uhuru Kenyatta and Ethiopia Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, will officially launch the sh1.9 billion Liwatoni pedestrian floating bridge in Mombasa county. The 1.2 Kilometer bridge is the first of its kind in the region which is designed to ease pressure on the Likoni ferry crossing, by leaving the ferry to serve vehicular and cargo crossing between Mombasa Island and the South Coast.

PM Abiy is on a two day official visit in the country aimed at increasing the volume of trade between the Kenya and Ethiopia. Yesterday, he commissioned the Moyale One-Stop Border Post in Marsabit county, which is expected to ease customs clearance and immigration. He was received and joined by his host President Uhuru who received him in Mayole county at the border post.

He challenged the head of state to work on the security of the Northern region to enable it to realize its full potential. He added that the launch was a success due to the unity between the two countries.

he said, “We are one people, one country. This new infrastructure will help the two countries in terms of business, trade and tourism.

President Kenyatta said, “We cannot establish an economic history if we are consistently experiencing insecurity.”

Abiy’s visit is his first foreign trip since announcing the completion of a military operation in the Tigray region. The fight has left thousands dead and tens of thousands refugees in neighboring countries.

Abiy said, “I am pleased to announce that we have completed and ceased the military operation in the Tigray region. Our focus now will be on rebuilding the region and providing humanitarian assistance while federal police apprehend the TPLF clique.”
