Nov, 27th 2020 – A notice of motion to oust governor Mike Sonko has been tabled in the Nairobi county assembly. Reports indicate that up to 86 MCAs have signed the notice which paves way for an impeachment motion next week.

The MCAs have accused governor Sonko for gross misconduct in connection to the budget approval for the current financial year. They allege that impeachment was the top agenda of the two meetings held on Monday and Tuesday at Capital Hill. The Tuesday meeting was attended by the county assembly leadership.

The house leadership comprises of of the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, Majority and Minority leaders, Deputy Majority and Minority leaders, Majority and Minority Chief Whips and their deputies.

Minoritty Leader Michael Ogada raised a number of issues for the removal of Sonko from office, key issues being gross violation of the Constitution, committing a crime under national and international law, abuse of office and lacking the physical and mental capability to run the county government.

Mr. Ogada said that he will table evidence come Thursday to support the grounds for his removal adding that Sonko has failed to perform the few functions that he has been left with.

The Embakasi MCA said, “We will not keep on watching and waiting forever. We (Nairobi MCAs) have made a decision¬†to bite the bullet and make sure normalcy is brought back to the city. The only thing we can do as MCAs is to send him (Sonko) home and the people to bring us another governor and then we move on. The residents must see services being delivered.

A court in February saved Sonko from impeachment after he was accused of a Litany of misdeeds including abusing his office and financial mismanagements.

Sonko says that he will not grant the Gen Mohamed Badi-led NMS Sh27.1 billion, its share of the budget. This is likely to stall the implementation of projects in the capital city.
