October 19th, 2020 – Following the National Assembly’s approval of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) amendment Bill 2019, Deputy President William Ruto has urged participants of the 2022 elections to be prepared to accept the results of the polls.
The approval will allow the parliamentary Service Commission majority four slots to appoint electoral commissioners in the seven member panel.
“Anyone can assume the leadership of the Commission. We are ready and have confidence in our independent institutions,” said Ruto
He insinuates President Uhuru and His counterpart Raila are of the notion that they can dictate who heads the IEBC since their allies hold key positions in the House.
However, the President is required to select names from a list that will be presented to him by the panel, then forward it to the parliament.
He said, “They can fix any chairman or commissioner they want for the IEBC, but they must accept the outcome of the results.“
