October 19, 2020 – Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, has defended his action to decline the approval of the Nairobi county appropriation bill.
Addressing supporters over the weekend, Sonko said some of the county functions left to him were denied more funds without explanation.
He said, “The MCAs, through the finance budget, had made a good document which we all agreed on but unfortunately some people came in with their own changes.“
He lamented the slashing of budget allocation to the Education for the ECD, Disaster management and Sports departments.
He however denied allegations that his returning of the bill to the county assembly, was a battle with Nairobi metropolitan services which took over some of the key functions of Nairobi County.
The county assembly will now reconsider the bill but can overrule the governor with a two-thirds majority support of the bill in its current state.
