Oct 8th 2020 – Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei has set a new world record in the 10,000 metres men’s race.
Cheptegei clocked 26:11:02 at the World Record Day event in Valencia, Spain to beat Kenenisa Bekele’s 15-year-old by some six seconds.
“It was my dream to write history on the track and make people to know that track is still exciting,” said Cheptegei.
In the women showcase Ethiopia’s Letesenbet Gidey broke the women’s 5,000m world record in Valencia, beating the previous best by more than four seconds.
Gidey, clocked 14 minutes 6.62 seconds to better the 14mins 11.15secs set by fellow Ethiopian Tirunesh Dibaba in 2008.
