Hundreds of thousands of Tibetans have been forced into labour camps and military-style training centres as alleged by their president-in-exile and verified by Reuters. This programme involves large-scale training and transfer of rural surplus labourers to other parts of the Tibet Autonomous Region.
Over half a million surplus labourers have been trained in the first 7 months of this year. The Chinese authorities have not commented on the findings but had claimed that the training schemes were aimed to develop “work discipline, Chinese Language and work ethics.
Tibet which is mainly remote and Buddhist, is a self governing region in China which is accused of suppressing people’s cultural and religious freedom.
It is stated that most of the trained subsistence farmers and herders end up in low paying jobs like textile manufacturing, construction and agriculture. According to Beijing’s assimilatory ethnic minority policy, these policies will lead to a long-term loss of linguistic, cultural and spiritual heritage.
