September 22nd 2020 – Kenya is set to host the world continental tour gold athletics meet in Nairobi dubbed the KIP Keino Classic.

Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei said the continental tour to be held on the 3rd of October will be a plus to Kenyan athletics.

The event will be staged at the newly renovated Nyayo national stadium. The meet precedes the London Marathon that will be held on the 4th of October.

According to the Amina Mohamed the Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Culture, and Heritage, only 6000 fans will be allowed into the Nyayo Stadium.

Amina says the decision is following the recommendations from the Health Ministry, for easier adherence to COVID-19 containment measures i.e social distancing.

Athletics Kenya are hoping for the stadium to at least be half-way filled, but the Sports CS Amina, says it is not possible.

We are in discussions with the Ministry of Health but I don’t think it will be possible. That’s too close,” Amina said.

She further said, She added; “People will buy the tickets online and once we hit the 6,000 mark, the portal closes.”

According to the Athletics Kenya Boss Jackson Tuwei, about 150 athletes from across the world have registered, and a provisional list is expected today evening.

Among Kenyan athletes already confirmed for the event include: former Commonwealth Games champion Mercy Cherono, national 100m record holder and former World Under-18 bronze medalist Mary Moraa.

The Sports CS, Amina, also said, “We want to showcase our country to the whole world and also show that we can host a successful event, even as we look forward to bidding for the hosting of the World Championship in 2025.”
