September 8th 2020 – Tharaka Nithi Governor Muthomi Njuki and 16 other officials will spend another night in custody after the Anti-Corruption court said it will make a ruling on the bail application by the defense lawyers.
The Governor and the fifteen other co-accused persons, were presented before Milimani-based Magistrate Douglas Ogoti.
The governor and his 15 co-accused persons have been charged with graft, for embezzling 34 million shillings, belonging to the county government. According to investigations, the accused had embezzled public funds in the award and execution of the 34 million solid waste incinerator contract, irregularly awarded.
It has also been confirmed that the project was procured, implemented, and commissioned without an Environmental Impact Assessment and before the National Environment Authority issued a license, DPP Noordin Haji pointed out.
The accused’s charges range from abuse of office, conspiracy to commit a felony, conflict of interest and failure to comply with the law.
Muthomi was also charged with an additional count, of fraudulent practice in procurement, for the supply of an incinerator. The accused have all pleaded not guilty.
